TBP highlighted in Hamilton Commission report tackling lack of diversity in F1

The Hamilton Commission, an initiative setup by Sir Lewis Hamilton, the first Black person to race in Formula One, has revealed that only 1% of motorsport engineering jobs are held by people from Black backgrounds, and highlights case studies of “outright racism” in UK motorsport.

The Blair Project’s ProtoEV STEM Challenge was one of several best practice exemplars highlighted in the report for tackling ethnic inequalities and improving the representation of Black people in engineering and motorsport. It was one of more than a hundred organisations interviewed in the past year. The research also included detailed data analysis, surveying and literature review.

Said Founder and CEO Nile Henry “When I started The Blair Project 7 years ago, tackling racial inequalities and making motorsport more diverse, affordable, accessible and sustainable was not taken seriously by the motorsport sector. We had to overcome many barriers, hurdles and also rejection. But, our resilience, persistence and never say die attitude has won the day!

The Blair Project is the only Black led motorsport organisation in the world working to grow electric karting and, the diverse talent pipeline needed to fuel the green industrial revolution. I am honoured that our trailblazing work has been recognised by Sir Lewis Hamilton, and is featured on pages 40, 100-101 of his Hamilton Commission report. The report makes ten principle recommendations including apprenticeships and support for organisations like ours.

We look forward to working with Sir Lewis, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the wider motorsport sector to normalise diversity and  inclusion in #STEM industries.”  Click here to read the full report.
